Nine people arrested for the excesses in Bilbao
Nine were arrested during the riots in Bilbao before the match between local Athletic and Spartak (Moscow) in the Europa League tournament.
“Nine are detained, four of whom are foreigners – three Russians and one Polish, and the other five are Spanish citizens,” the police said.
In the clashes, a 51-year-old policeman died of a heart attack. Five other law enforcement officials have suffered as well as four Russian ultras.
UEFA strongly condemned the riots and began an investigation.
“UEFA strongly condemns the conflicts in Bilbao and we are in contact with the local police to clarify the situation.” UEFA expresses sincere condolences to the family and colleagues of the policeman who died as a result of the incidents, “said UEFA.
Athletic Bilbao lost to Spartacus 1: 2, but continued in the 4: 3 overall tournament.
